Steve Johnson is a seasoned executive with a track record of building innovative technologies into successful enterprises. Steve started his career by founding Johnson-Grace Company, which developed a patented compression technology that made fast, easy distribution of images, sound and video a reality for millions of consumers. AOL purchased Johnson-Grace and made Steve Vice President of its Software and Technology Development division where he brought leading-edge media, telephony and broadcast products to market. Subsequently, he founded ChoiceStream to help consumers navigate through this new era of easy access to virtually infinite choices.
John J. Huggins is an active angel/venture capital investor in technology and other startup companies. He also serves as a real estate development and financial advisor to businesses and non-profit organizations seeking public participation in community and economic development projects. He co-founded and was CFO of Johnson-Grace Company. John has long been involved in civic activities, including national, state and local political campaigns for candidates and issues. He has raised millions of dollars for a variety of civic causes and organizations. John holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Political Science from the University of Chicago.
Ruben Johnson joins Notable with a long track record of success in sales and marketing. He spent a decade in the food and beverage world, obtaining certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers and working in the craft spirits industry in marketing and sales roles. Additionally, he worked as a bar and restaurant manager where he learned how to lead a team that puts the customers’ needs before all else (and how to make the perfect Ramos Gin Fizz). Ruben is a graduate of Northeastern University with a B.S. in Political Science and a minor in History.
David was the architect and senior leader of most of the software development efforts related to networking, scale, performance, and reliability of the core AOL online service and AIM (instant messenger) during its highest growth period. He managed 700 engineers plus related staff.
Barry Appelman is known in technology circles worldwide as the father of the “buddy list” and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Appelman lead the development of IBM’s TCP/IP products while at IBM Research and at AOL lead server development from 1993 to 2001, growing the staff from 14 to over 700, where he was CTO and SVP of Systems Development. He has authored or co-authored 82 patents.
Kevin has more than a decade of signal processing and visualization software experience. In his previous position at a small business he brought to life cutting edge radar technology, providing customers with new ways to see and interact with their data. Kevin enjoys writing software that works closely with hardware systems. He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with an emphasis in Computer Graphics and Visualization from the University of California, Irvine.
Sarah Denton is a recent college graduate from California State University, Long Beach with a B.S. in Computer Science. She enjoys developing back-end software and eagerly looks forward to learning and exploring new forms of technology as she begins her career. In her time at Notable Systems she has delved into a broad range of projects, and especially enjoys building upon the logging/alert system and developing server-side utilities for monitoring the status of the system.
Kate Hackett has a long history of building and leading technical and customer support operations. Her specialty is serving as an effective liaison between clients, vendors, engineers, and management. Kate holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Family and Child Development from Virginia Polytechnic and State University.
Yan Cheng is a hard-core software developer who likes to solve very hard problems through smart algorithms and solid engineering. While at AOL, he built many systems that provided online services to millions of customers. After AOL, he architected a cloud-based system that enables the collaboration among healthcare professionals and agencies to provide quality service to patients. While consulting for a prestigious client, he developed an extremely sophisticated award-winning solution that automatically converts computer programs written in assembler language to high-level language. He is the author of multiple patents in computer security.
Steve’s career spans engineering, company building and early-stage investing. Prior to Grotech, he was a General Partner with Novak Biddle Venture Partners investing in early-stage software and communications equipment companies. Steve began his career in research and development with IBM and then joined a venture-funded software company in the document imaging space called Vantage Solutions, which was acquired in 1994. Steve subsequently co-founded software development firm MartinScott before moving to venture capital in 1997.
James T. Caillouette, M.D. is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and a founder of both Newport Orthopedic Institute and the Hoag Orthopedic Institute, where he serves as Chairman. He has developed, patented and commercialized multiple orthopedic devices and instruments over the past 28 years and is currently consulting worldwide for DePuy/Johnson and Johnson. He is a passionate leader in healthcare economics and reform, and in the design of next generation hip and knee implants.
Dr. Marlene Beggelman is a recognized leader in applying innovative health information technologies to improve healthcare delivery. She is the founder of three health technology companies including her most recent, Enhanced Medical Decisions, Inc. Dr. Beggelman has led large-scale HIT projects for insurers, government organizations, hospitals, and fortune 100 companies, and has developed applications that empower consumer choice. Dr. Beggelman received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and a Master Degree in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. She trained in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and her undergraduate degree is in physics.
Dereesa’s experience spans the breadth of the healthcare industry, serving in a variety of executive roles ranging from hospital operations, physician practice management, managed care network development and self-insured health plans. Prior to healthcare, she served as a financial professional in the semi-conductor industry, chemical manufacturing, computer services and agriculture production. Dereesa’s innovative perspective has solved a variety of business challenges in multiple industries. She believes innovative technology and interoperability are central to the future of value-driven healthcare.
Gabrielle White, RN, CASC has over 25 years’ experience in the health care industry with a background in peri-operative nursing and administration. She is currently an Executive Director at Hoag Orthopedic Institute, where she has clinical and administrative oversight of the Orthopedic Surgery Center of Orange County and leads network development for the Institute with a primary focus on bundled payment programs and growth strategy for the self-insured employer market.
Thom Farris has spent his career leading early stage and established medical devices companies introducing first of breed, disruptive technologies in highly competitive environments. He has a long history of growing new markets, successful product launches, and thought leader development, as well as the integration and management of strategic plans and teams. He holds two degrees from the University of Georgia, a B.S. Biochemistry and an M.S. in Physiology and a device technology patent.

Christopher Grace, an angel investor, was the co-CEO and co-founder of Johnson-Grace Company (Irvine, CA), which pioneered data compression and streaming Internet technology. The company was acquired by AOL in 1996. Prior to founding Johnson-Grace, Mr. Grace was the head of economic development for St. Louis and a senior development official in Boston. He holds degrees from the University of Virginia (B.S., Finance), Stanford University (J.D.), and Harvard University (M.P.P.).
